I volunteered twice. Once on the Friday before the assembly. I remember doing yard work and being told to not wear a shirt with any kind of slogan. They serve you lunch like you're in Bethel.
I went one day to help with the expansion.

I was only on it once. I gave a demonstration at the pioneer day on a Friday. It got me noticed by a lot of single pioneer sisters but that was about the extent of its noveity.

I don't know if they still have that soft serve ice cream maker but it was a highlight to get an ice cream and then walk outside to the pond in back.
Way back I remember they used to serve salisbury steak as the hot meal and it was delicious!
The parking spaces were RIDICULOUSLY narrow! No one could fit and I think they actually fit less cars because of it.
There was a black guy that used to direct the parking for YEARS! I wonder if he still is there.
People used to sit in the cafeteria and talk while the program was going on.
One of my last assemblies was with the biggest asshole I've ever come across for a District Overseer. All he could talk about was whether people were meeting the national average in field service. There was no love in this man, just an obsession with statistics. He did a lot to help me make my decision to leave.

I'd like to think that God is better than that. That he wouldn't play with his people's emotions decade after decade, teasing them with new predictions of the end, forcing them to live bizarre lives never thinking they're going to die or make house repairs or get married or have children or get educated or really care about anything in this material world. That he wouldn't repress individuality to such a complete degree. That he wouldn't inflict constant guilt and a feeling of never being able to do enough. That he wouldn't warp your mind so that you're looking forward to the slaughter of 7 billion people.
It really seems rather fiendish of God if he were to use his one channel to mindf_ck people in such a complete way. Even after my fade I feel like I'll never be totally normal, that I'll alway fear Armageddon, that I'll always have Kingdom songs running through my head.
God, if you're out there, show yourself!

Ray probably didn't elaborate much about this change because really what can be said about it? For someone to be able to try to explain this to someone else with a straight face would be quite a feat. This to me is equivalent to asking the membership to drink the Kool-aid. This crosses every line. There really wasn't even an attempt to explain it with any degree of rationality. Just throw the word "evidently" in there and hope the masses believe just because it's in the Watchtower.
